How to Arrange a Summer Get-together
Planning a summer get-together? It’s a splendid way to enjoy quality time with friends and family, hopefully in the sunshine!
If you’ve never hosted before or you’re just looking for inspiration to elevate this year’s event, here’s our guide to arranging the perfect summer party.
Planning and invitations
Start by deciding on a date and time that works for you and your guests. People tend to have more plans during the summer, so send out your invitations well in advance.
Go traditional with elegant paper invitations or send out digital versions for convenience and sustainability. Be sure to include all essential details, such as the date, time and location. Don’t forget any special instructions such as the dress code and what to bring.
Encourage guests to RSVP so you can get an accurate headcount to aid your preparation.
Setting the scene
Decide whether you’re hosting the party indoors, outdoors or with the option of both. Set up the area to create an inviting atmosphere with comfortable seating, plenty of standing space and decorative elements.
For a magical touch, string up fairy lights or lanterns to illuminate as the sun sets. Bunting and colourful tablecloths bring an energising street party atmosphere and help to brighten things up.
Arrange furniture to promote conversation and ensure there are plenty of shaded areas if it’s a particularly hot day.
Evening events are always more special with a fire pit or outdoor heaters to provide warmth and a cosy ambience.
Delicious food and refreshing drinks
Food is the centrepiece of many summer parties. Opt for a mix of light and hearty dishes that can be easily prepared in advance.
Think fresh salads, grilled vegetables and a selection of meats and vegetarian options for the barbecue.
Finger foods like sandwiches, quiches and dips are always crowd-pleasers. For dessert, consider fresh fruit platters, trifles or ice cream.
Refreshing drinks are also a must. Offer a healthy variety including homemade lemonade, iced tea and fruit-infused water. Keep plenty of ice on hand to keep drinks cool throughout the day.
Fun and engaging activities
There’s no harm in planning a few activities to keep your guests entertained. Classic lawn games like croquet and boules can be great fun.
For a more relaxed atmosphere, set up a corner with blankets and cushions for guests to lounge and chat.
Be prepared with some indoor activities in reserve if the weather isn’t too kind. An exciting game of online bingo or a karaoke machine can help to bring people together. Play summer tunes in the background to maintain the atmosphere and encourage dancing.
Preparing for the British weather
Sadly, you can’t always count on the British weather – as we’ve seen this summer so far. If there’s a chance of showers, consider setting up a large gazebo to keep guests dry while keeping the party outside. It can also provide shade in extreme heat.
