Making your own taco seasoning is easy peasy! You’ll wonder why you haven’t done it before.
And the best part? You can change it up. Like more garlic? Add more.
Want it spicy? Add some chilli.
You start with 5 spices, a bit of salt and a bit of cornflour.
My recipe is as follows – chop and change as you see fit.
INGREDIENTS:
3 tsp smoked paprika {or chilli powder}
6 tsp garlic powder
7 tsp ground cumin
4 tsp paprika
3 tsp mixed herbs
3 tsp salt*
2 tsp cornflour {optional}
Mix all together in a bowl and store in an air tight jar.
This makes about 8 Tbs of seasoning, and I usually use about 1 Tbs per 500g of mince, so this will last you a little while :o}
When cooking, add a good dollop of tomato paste and some water to the desired consistency. Some like their tacos saltier {like hubby} and so add salt to your taste. I add chilli just to mine since the kiddos aren’t keen :o}
I always add pureed veg to our taco meat – carrot, celery, zucchini and spinach and my kids are none-the-wiser. When doing this though I will often add another 1/2 – 1 tsp of seasoning while cooking after giving it a bit of a taste. This is great especially for kids like my Noah who won’t put lettuce, tomato or salsa on their tacos!
The first time you make this, it might be more expensive than buying a packet mix, depending on how many of the spices you don’t already have. But it works out to be much cheaper in the end, up to 8 dinners if using 1 Tbs per dinner. I buy my spices in bulk also which makes it even cheaper. :o}
Happy Taco Seasoning Making!

*{better if you use unrefined salt like pink himalayan or pink murray river but I had run out!}
Brilliant!! I’ll definitely have to give this a try. I usually use the packet mixes and/or a big pinch of cumin (love that stuff!). It’ll be nice to whip up my own batch with herbs i already have in the cupboard!
Bianca, we are scarily alike in our daily adentures! So many times, I have opened your blog posts to see exactly what I have been doing or planning. It’s eerie! We swapped over to home made taco spice mix a few months ago and we all adore it. No more nasty additives in the packets mixes and it tastes so good!
Oh heavenly stars! Perfect timing for the Mexican Fever which has hit Melbourne! I have been looking for a taco mix recipe for years and tried a couple but never had success… THIS, I can’t wait to try!! Gracias!!!
This is fantastic! We often have tacos and I am really looking forward to using your seasoning recipe and I LOVE the idea of pureeing vegies in the meat. My boy can always see my grated vegies in mince and will then refuse to eat so I cant wait to do the pureeing in the meat now too. Love your ideas Bianca! Thanks so much. xo
I love this!
I can see this being used for chilli-con-carne, enchiladas, nachos, tacos or anything that needs some flavour!
Thanks for this 🙂
I have always wanted to get a recipe for this! Thanks for sharing! I just pinned this as well!
